New gambling education resources launched at House of LordsOn 8th March 2007 at the House of Lords, Tacade launched two new educational resource packs for young people. ‘You Bet!’ and ‘Just Another Game?’ are two sets of innovative teaching resources that have been developed to raise awareness amongst young people, and encourage debate, about gambling issues. They have been funded by RIGT and developed by Tacade, in collaboration with the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University. The launch was well-attended and those gathered were warmly welcomed by Baroness Massey of Darwen, from the Tacade Board of Trustees. RIGT Chairman, John Greenway MP, spoke briefly to thank contributors and in particular to thank the gambling industry for the donations that made the whole project possible. Mark Griffiths, Nottingham Trent University, and Martin Buczkiewicz, Chief Executive of Tacade, then set the scene before giving the platform to the group of young people, from the Darlington Youth Service and Peacemakers Oldham, who helped develop the resources. It was refreshing to hear from articulate youngsters who had tested the materials, and who represented those who were most likely to benefit. They gave the audience a taste of what it meant for them to have access to such useful information and one young man summed it up by saying, ‘...I now have the knowledge to pass on to other young people so that they can make informed decisions.’ Nick Ross, President of Tacade, rounded off the event by saying that gambling issues should be given as much priority as drugs issues and it was ‘…fantastic that Tacade was helping to raise the profile and public awareness.’ These are hopefully the first of many resources that will be freely available for teachers, peer educators and youth workers, in schools and youth centres nationwide.
