First sports club to fund RIGT

16 March 2007

The Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT) confirmed that it has today received a substantial donation from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

RIGT Chairman, John Greenway MP, said, “We are delighted to welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the growing list of RIGT donors. Tottenham Hotspur have shown the way in recognising football’s increasing involvement with the gambling and betting industry. We would welcome the contribution of more clubs in raising public awareness about responsible gambling and providing a safety net for those who do gamble which they can do by supporting our work.”

Tottenham Hotspur have asked the Trust to monitor how sponsorship of football by gambling companies may have an impact on attitudes to gambling by children and young people. Mr Greenway will be meeting soon with Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore to discuss this and a broad range of issues concerning football and gambling.
